When the World Feels Heavy: Meditation for Anxious Times

If you’ve been feeling anxious or heavy lately — you’re not alone. In this video, I share a practical meditation approach for dealing with global anxiety, rising costs, and the general heaviness many of us are feeling right now.

Why doom-scrolling and escapism don’t actually help

When the world feels overwhelming — with wars in Ukraine and Iran, prices going up, petrol costs rising — it’s understandable that we might stray into negative emotions. Our common response is often a kind of escapism: doom-scrolling, arguing on social media, binge-watching, or binge-eating. But as we know, these responses don’t actually help. They amplify the anxiety rather than resolve it.

Think global, act local

So what can we do instead? There’s a saying I love: “Think global, act local.” We can’t personally stop wars or change global events. But we can choose how we show up in our own community. Be confident that acting in your community has a small but significant influence on people around you. And if enough of us do so in a positive way, that creates real change in the world.

Meditation as confrontation, not escapism

Meditation isn’t about escaping negative emotions. It’s actually about confronting them — because they will come up in your meditation practice. But if you can practice pacifying the mind, finding peace even amidst those negative emotions, then you’re doing something truly positive for your mind.
